One size does not necessarily
fit all, particularly in residential heating and air conditioning applications.
A. O. Smith Electrical Products Company is introducing two "comfort
speed" fan motors to meet the extensive requirements of HVAC manufacturers--and
the wide-ranging variety of applications in the residential market.
• The new Gemini ™ motor contributes to improved system efficiency
and quiet operation, particularly at lower speeds.
• The Gemini Plus is a series of fan and blower motors that consist
of motor and built-in electronics.
The two new motors will be unveiled at this year's AHR Expo at the Anaheim
(Calif.) Convention Center, Jan. 26-28. A. O. Smith Electrical Products
Company will be exhibiting the motors in booth 6529 at the show.
The company also will discuss a third comfort speed solution that it expects
will be available later this year. The new motor features sophisticated
electronics and programmability to provide a variable-speed solution for
high-end applications. The electronically controlled motor is designed
to deliver constant cubic feet per minute (CFM) to enable customers to
obtain the most efficiency out of their heating or cooling systems.
"These new motors enable our customers to enjoy the many benefits
that a 'comfort speed' solution can provide without having to pay the
premium price associated with variable speed motors," Chris Ruttle,
senior vice president-global sales and marketing, A. O. Smith Electrical
Products Company, points out.
"Taking advantage of our family of comfort speed products, customers
will be able to match the motor to the application and gain the right
mix of features and benefits for their HVAC systems," Ruttle adds.
The Gemini motor is actually two electric motors in one. The innovative
design mounts two separate rotors and stators on the same shaft in the
same main frame. Each motor comes with multiple taps so that the customer
can isolate high speed operation and low-speed operation for improved
system efficiency.
"By using a second synchronous speed motor during low-speed operation,
the customer can obtain greater speed separation," David Reeder,
product planning manager-HAC motors, explains. "The installer can
select the right speed tap for the individual residential application."
The Gemini motor offers quieter operation than conventional permanent
split capacitor products and is easy to install.
The Gemini Plus comes with electronics that can be pre-programmed to match
the low speed performance with the high speed that the installer selects
for the specific application.
The moisture-resistant electronics in the Gemini Plus are well-suited
for heating and air conditioning applications, and there is no need to
install relays or other additional components. The Gemini Plus motor also
offers quiet operation at low speeds.
Both the Gemini motor and the Gemini Plus offer homeowners a number of
comfort benefits:
• More consistent temperatures thanks to constant air circulation
at reduced speeds. This eliminates stratification in the home;
• Cleaner air--When the motor runs in the continuous operation mode,
it continually circulates air through the filters or electronic air cleaner;
• Better humidity control--In continuous operation mode, the motor
can allow furnace humidifiers to work more effectively, while the constant
air flow over an air conditioner's evaporator coils helps remove moisture;
• Enhanced system efficiency at high and low speeds.
A. O. Smith Electrical Products Company is a leading manufacturer of alternating
current (A/C) and direct current (D/C) fractional horsepower motors, hermetic
