 A.O. Smith Awarded Contract to Supply Motors to GEA Power Cooling Systems

October 23, 2001 - Tipp City, Ohio – A.O. Smith Electrical Products Company announced that it has been awarded a contract to provide 100 custom designed multi-speed integral horsepower motors to GEA Power Cooling Systems, Inc. (GEA PCS) to power axial fans for air-cooled condensers at two North American power plants. The contract is among the largest for number of motors ever awarded by GEA PCS, which provides design and engineering solutions for heat rejection equipment for parent company GEA AG, a world leader in the air cooled condenser and heat rejection industry since 1920.

A.O. Smith will provide 50 150/37.5 horsepower 449 Frame motors and 50 200/50 horsepower 449 Frame motors to GEA PCS for use in air-cooled condensers at power plants in Choctaw County, Miss. and Hunterstown, Pa. A.O. Smith engineers custom designed the motors to a number of stringent specifications – including a low sound requirement of 92 decibels.

A.O. Smith is a veteran supplier of electric motors for air-cooled condenser applications and has served as a motor supplier to GEA for more than two decades.

"A.O. Smith has solid experience in building motors for this application," said Larry Lewis, GEA purchasing agent. "We selected them based on their expertise, responsiveness and competitive level."

Founded in 1977, GEA Power Cooling Systems, Inc., based in San Diego, Calif., specializes in innovative design and engineering solutions for heat rejection needs.
