A.O. Smith Introduces New Shipping Packaging for Pool and Spa Motors

November 8, 2000 - New Packaging Designed to Approach Zero Damage During Shipping of Single Motors.

Tipp City, Ohio – Effective November, 2000, A.O. Smith will be shipping all single-order pool and spa motors in special Styrofoam® packaging designed to help eliminate risk of product damage during transport. The new packaging will be on display at A.O. Smith’s booth 1801 during NSPI 2000, held in Orlando, Fla., November 8 through November 10.

Two different sizes of Styrofoam® inserts, cut either for motors with capacitors or those without capacitors, are designed to protect the full range of A.O. Smith pool and spa pump motors by keeping them securely in the center of the shipping box.

A leading supplier of pool and spa motors, A.O. Smith single-ships hundreds of thousands of pool and spa motors per year to its nationwide network of pool and spa distributors. The remaining motors are sent via pallet pack.

The packaging transition is a recommendation by an internal continuous improvement team, which used International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) standards in extensive package vibration and drop testing.

"We conducted extensive testing on a variety of packaging and achieved 100 percent positive results on drop tests using the Styrofoam® inserts," explains Dennis Studebaker, product specialist for A.O. Smith Electrical Products Company and a member of the continuous improvement team assembled to improve motor packaging. "Every indication is that the new packaging will all but eliminate risk of damage during shipping – an important step in our ongoing campaign to achieve complete customer satisfaction."
