April 26, 2000 - Tipp City, Ohio A. O. Smith Electrical Products Company, a leading manufacturer of electric motors for diverse residential, commercial and industrial applications, will be changing selected electric motor nameplate labeling to reflect its strengthened position as a single-source supplier of electric motors. During the first half of 2000, the A. O. Smith brand name will begin to appear on nameplates, carton labels, and packaging that formerly were labeled as MagneTek. This transition is part of the contractual agreement A. O. Smith reached when it purchased MagneTek Inc.s global motor operations in August 1999. A. O. Smith will retain the well-respected Century ® and Universal brand names, according to Paul Doyle, vice president-marketing for A. O. Smith Electrical Products Company. "This gives us three of the most widely known names in the motor business," Doyle noted, "as well as one of the most comprehensive product lines in the industry, extending from subfractional horsepower through hermetic and integral horsepower motors." The name change does not affect UL, CSA, or any other agency product listing. The nameplate will continue to verify UL and CSA certification using the current designations. A.O. Smith is targeting this year to complete the process, Doyle said. The company is eliminating the MagneTek name of motor cartons until all nameplates are converted. During the transition process, A. O. Smith will use a plain carton to minimize the occurrence of an A. O. Smith-nameplated motor in a MagneTek box. With the acquisition of MagneTeks worldwide electric motor operations, A. O. Smith significantly strengthened its position in a number of fractional horsepower motor market segments and tripled the size of its replacement motor business. The addition of MagneTeks integral horsepower and DC motor lines opened new markets to the company. The MagneTek purchase was A. O. Smiths third strategic acquisition in the last three years. In July 1998, the company acquired General Electrics domestic hermetic motor business. In March 1997, A. O. Smith acquired UPPCO Inc., the worlds largest manufacturer of subfractional horsepower motors. For more information on this transition, contact an A. O. Smith sales representative at 937-667-2431. A.O. Smith Electrical Products Company, based in Tipp City, Ohio, is A.O. Smith Corporations largest operating unit with 1999 sales of $723 million. It manufactures a comprehensive line of hermetic, subfractional, fractional, and integral horsepower AC and DC electric motors used in a wide array of consumer, commercial, and industrial products.
